A Dead Heat at 3000 Frames Per Second

Wow. You don’t see that every day.

The photofinish was taken with Lynx, too – the best technology available. I didn’t think a true dead heat at that resolution was even possible, but this illustrates the difference between “inconceivable” and “impossible”.

I’ve seen 10,000 fps photofinish pictures of two Indy cars passing side-by-side through a Lynx at 100 m/s (well over 200 mph) staggered by about 1 cm, and the difference on the Lynx capture was clear as a bell. Two runners in a dead heat for an Olympic spot must be, statistically, more improbable than two bullets colliding in mid-air.
